New Award-winning Documentary: ‘Unbroken: The Untold Story of Shen Yun’

Shen Yun Performing Arts is the subject of a new award-winning documentary, “Unbroken: The Untold Story of Shen Yun,” which was released by NTD’s Sincere Pictures on Tuesday, March 24. The film follows the stories of Shen Yun performers and their families as they contend with a global, illicit intimidation and interference campaign linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

Shen Yun is known as the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Established in New York’s Hudson Valley in 2006, the company seeks to revive traditional Chinese culture, presenting the essence of “China before communism” on stage, and telling the story of the persecuted Falun Gong spiritual group—a mission that has made it a target of the CCP.

Over its 20-year rise to global acclaim, Shen Yun has endured escalating attempts to stop its performances, from extensive disinformation drives to hoax bomb threats—on American soil and beyond. Undeterred, the company has continued to tour around the world each year.

“Unbroken” takes an in-depth look at the challenges Shen Yun’s artists face behind the scenes. The documentary pieces together a disturbing picture of targeted interference, while revealing the inner strength, resilience, and faith of the artists who refuse to be silenced by it.

NTD marked the film’s premiere with a red carpet event and discussion panel that featured Shen Yun performers at the AMC Theater at Lincoln Square in New York City.
